Changes to Pre-Rego GVM Upgrades in Australia

What’s Changed & Why It Matters?

As of January 2026, we’re currently delivering one of the last pre-rego GVM upgrades of its kind on a V8 LandCruiser 79 Series.

This build includes:

  • 4" suspension lift
  • 35" tyres
  • 4495kg GVM
  • 4000kg towing capacity
  • 7995kg GCM
  • JMACX electric in-cab shock absorbers
  • OTA shock controller mount and snap-fit module mount (under seat)

This configuration represents the end of an era for pre-registration GVM upgrades on certain vehicles.

Why Are These Changes Happening?

The change comes down to updates to ADR 80/04 emissions standards.

Vehicles in the NB1 category must now meet Euro 6 emissions compliance. With the Toyota V8 engine discontinued, it’s highly unlikely these rules will be revised to allow previous upgrade pathways.

In short:

  • The emissions rules have change
  • The V8 is no longer in production
  • Pre-rego approval options are now limited

What Does This Mean If You’re Looking at a GVM Upgrade?

While pre-rego options have tightened, GVM upgrades are still very much available, just through different pathways.

Your Current Options?

Post-Registration GVM Upgrades

  • At Mick Tighe 4x4 & Outdoor, currently Ironman 4x4 & JMACX now has approvals for post-rego GVM and GCM upgrades on selected models
  • This allows compliant upgrades after the vehicle is registered

NB2 Category Conversions

  • 4505kg GVM upgrade is available for the 79 Series Dual Cab with a JMACX Kit
  • Supports 4" lift and 35" tyres

Important to note:

  • NB2 vehicles require a truck licence
  • 0.00% alcohol limit applies

This pathway suits customers who need higher load capacity and understand the licensing and compliance requirements.

Vehicles Still Eligible for Pre-Rego GVM Upgrades?

We continue to offer pre-registration GVM upgrades on the following platforms:

  • Toyota LandCruiser 300 Series
  • Toyota 250 Series Prado
  • Ford Ranger
  • INEOS Grenadier

Each platform has its own limits and approval requirements, which we’ll walk you through before any work begins.

The Takeaway

  • Pre-rego V8 GVM upgrades are effectively finished
  • Post-rego and NB2 pathways are now the solution
  • There are still strong, compliant options depending on your vehicle and intended use
  • Getting the advice before you buy or modify is more important than ever

If you’re planning a build or weighing up a GVM upgrade, speak with our team early. The rules have changed, but the right setup is still achievable with the correct approvals.
