After months of planning, our 2026 road trip is finally underway. Over the coming weeks, we'll be travelling from Toowoomba through outback Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Along the way, we'll be sharing highlights from the road, memorable experiences, interesting local attractions and some of the incredible scenery that makes this part of the country so special.
Our first day on the road took us from Toowoomba to Lara Wetlands, a popular stopover located near Barcaldine in central Queensland. The journey provided a reminder of just how diverse Queensland's landscape can be, as well as its distinctive beauty.
Arriving at Lara Wetlands, it was easy to see why the location is a popular one. It’s surrounded by natural beauty, the campground offers plenty of fire pits, heaps of firewood, and the facilities were clean with nice hot showers.
The wetlands themselves were teeming with different birdlife, & after setting up it was easy to relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

The cherry on top came after we settled in and watched Queensland secure a famous State of Origin victory, making an already memorable first night on the road even more enjoyable. As an overnight stop, Lara Wetlands proved to be an unreal choice and a great introduction to the adventure ahead.
After leaving Lara Wetlands we made a brief stop in Barcaldine, snapping this photo of the local Masonic Lodge:
With many thousands of kilometres still ahead of us and destinations such as Kakadu, the Kimberley, Exmouth and Karijini National Park on the itinerary, this is only the beginning. We look forward to sharing more stories and experiences from the road in the weeks to come.
